Become part of the SA Home Roasting community by entering Home Roast - SA’s first home roasting competition! We have great competition packs for each entrant - and you can stand to win some great coffee prizes, including:

• A hand coffee roaster from Coffee-Tech Engineering,
• Coffee from Green Coffee Supply 
• A share of R10 000 to spend on Timemore coffee gadgets at More Flavour.

NO PROFESSIONAL COFFEE ROASTERS ALLOWED!

Competition information:

• Coffee Magazine is the proprietor of this competition. If you have questions, email us on mel@magazine.coffee or iain@magazine.coffee.
• There are a limited number of competition spots - the first home roasters to enter and pay their entry fee will be in the competition on a first come, first served basis.
• This competition is only open to people who are hobbyists and are NOT in the business of roasting coffee!
• This competition is only open to people living in South Africa, but you do not need to be South African to enter - all are welcome!
• Each competitor will receive a competition pack  - with the exact same green coffee, a Third Wave Water pack from Brew Better to standardise the water, a coffee pouch to submit your entry in, a Home Roast limited edition tee shirt and a Home Roast sticker pack!
• Competitors may roast their green coffee any way they see fit - as long as you do it yourself, on your own equipment. This can be a frying pan, an oven, a popcorn maker, a home roasting machine or even a sample roaster, should you be lucky enough to own one!  
• Each competitor will get detailed feedback on their roast by our panel of judges.
• This competition is designed to grow the coffee community in SA - it is based around fun, learning and camaraderie! Yes, there will be a winner, and prizes for the Top 3.

Judging:
All coffees will be judged using the standard SCA Cupping protocol, from the SCA Heritage coffee standards page  (This is a great resource generally, if you are interested in coffee!) and also as an espresso - using standard parameters on the same espresso machine and using the same grinder - 20g in : 40g out at 20-25 second extraction.
Espresso shots will be pulled by a professional, competition barista.  
Judges will be a panel of SA’s top coffee professionals.

Competition dates and timelines:  
September 2024 - Entries open. You can enter using the form below.
October 2024 - Competitors get their competition packs.
November 2024 - Competitors send in their roasted coffee for judging.
December  2024 - Winners announced and prize giving at the Coffee Magazine Awards, 7th December in Cape Town !
