We love to see a coffee entrepreneur making their moves. On a late evening walk with a friend, she mentioned she had had a great coffee at Basi Bean as we walked past the beautiful mural that adorns the door. So I was keen to check it out for myself!
Cebile, initially trained at the International Hotel School and a former Manager at Durban institution Bike&Bean, has opened her own doors on the South Durban promenade with Basi Bean Cafe.
Bring a pop of colour and delightful smiles to this long neglected spot, Cebile assured me that the Municipality had been very helpful in assisting her to set up shop.
She was also quick to point out that it was normally Thando behind the machine and that he is the real coffee fanatic and taught her all she knows. He is obviously a good teacher, because the cappuccino was lovely and well-made. Ably supported by Coffee Merchant and Colombo Coffee, the passion of this two person team is clear to see.
They only opened in January of this year and it has been a tough first six months (every entrepreneur knows the feeling!), but they are optimistic and making new regulars every day.
They also offer an assortment of cold coffee options and their food offering will soon be up and running. If you spot this on your next morning walk along Durban's Golden Mile, be sure to support them!
P.s. It was a joy to see the beach and promenade being used for a variety of activities as the sun went down on a random Thursday in Durban. Try it sometime.
