Wat Tamp Jy? Artisanal Tampers from South Africa

In a world of tech and automation, you’re choosing to return to a classic, the original tamper. Tell us about that journey?

The original coffee tamper is the best because it gives baristas full control over the pressure, angle, and feel of each tamp. Unlike automated tampers, the manual process connects the barista to the craft, encouraging skill, consistency through practice, and a tactile awareness that machines can’t replicate.  It’s the purest expression of hand-crafted espresso!

Did you learn the skills specifically to make tampers or have you always been into woodwork?

I’ve always had a love for woodworking and creating things with my hands. These tampers I’ve started making have become a new passion of mine. Working in the coffee industry has taught me so many skills, and I wanted to be able to make some beautiful tampers that take the strain out of my hands from making so many coffees daily.

How did you research the different handle designs? And are all the bases standard?

I set out to engineer a tamper with ideal weight, balance, and ergonomics. Through countless prototypes and refinements, the goal was clear: to enhance the coffee-making ritual with a tamper that feels just right in the hand and delivers consistent, precise results.

I discovered that the best handle shape for a coffee tamper is a balloon style. Making you say, “Wow, that’s so comfortable for my hand. This feels natural.” I can create tampers in different sizes to suit customer preferences. My standard sizes are 51mm for smaller home machines and 58.4mm for larger machines.

Who is your target market for these works of art?

My mission is to create tampers that are not only highly functional but also beautifully crafted—designed to be both a tool of precision and a work of art. Each piece is thoughtfully made for baristas, enthusiasts, and anyone who values the details behind a perfect cup of coffee.

At Wat Tamp Jy, we believe that great coffee starts with great tools

What is your favourite part about being in the coffee business?

My favourite part of being in the coffee business is seeing how happy people are with what I serve, it genuinely makes my day. It’s not just about the coffee; it’s about the connection. The friendships, the familiar faces, and the incredibly supportive coffee community make it all worth it.
