Ecotact - protecting green coffee from Harvest to Roasting

Monday, 12 January, 2026

Ecotact has been a proud sponsor of A Shot in the Dark in 2024 and 2025 in both South Africa and Middle East. In this article we shine a light on the incredible work Ecotact are doing in protecting your green coffee right from harvest, through processing, transportation and export...right to the point where it lands in your roastery, in the most sustainable way possible.

The integrity of the competition is utmost, and thus it is paramount that the green coffee that is carefully chosen for the competitors is packed into the Ecotact hermetically sealed bags before being sent to the roasters, and again when the roasted coffee is received, the completion organisers re-pack the coffee into the ecotact bags while it is blind-juged through the course of the judging period.

Each Roaster in ASITD receives a roasters pack which consists of:

  • 1 x Troiseal
  • 4 x 500 gram sampler bags
  • 4 x 200 gram sampler bags
  • 5 x reusable cable ties
  • 5 x metal detectable cable ties
  • 6 x Biome Trays

But the process of protecting green coffee starts well upstream of the competition. Ecotact not only preserves the freshness of your food grains, but also preserves the planet by providing sustainable packaging and storage solutions.

In line with the 2030 Agenda of UN Sustainable Development Goals, Ecotact has committed to minimizing the carbon footprint in the storage and transport of green coffee beans and other grains. They seek to ensure economic sustainability while upholding the health of the environment. An Ecotact bag can be used up to 3 times, for optimal waste management and even won an award in Japan, at the SCA Japan awards for their Ship Shield Hermetic Container Liners This innovative storage solution has high barrier properties which seals the freshness of your food grains and ensures that the flavor and moisture remains intact.

The other two points worth mentioning is the nerw initiaive to recycle the protective bags your green coffee is transported in, through the Ecotact recycle box initiaitve:

and the fact that transparent plastic is much easier to recycle that pigmented plastic, and that's why you'll always see the Ecotact products being largely transparent!

Ecotact products are exclusively available in South Africa from I & M Smith (Pty) Ltd., situated in Ferndale, Randburg. . The items in the roaster packs are sold individually, or in bulk.
