One of the things we love the most about this Discover Great Coffee platform is getting to know new people, freshly passionate about coffee roasting. And Latham van den Bergh of Gather Roastery came in hot, wanting to soak up as much as he could about the industry, it is showing in his roasts! An all-round lekker oke, we're glad he has chosen coffee!
The roastery started under new management in July of 2024. It took some learning as Latham had only been making coffee as a barista in his prior business known as Heritage Brew (now a Mobile Coffee trailer). The mission was the same though, which was to provide the locals with great coffee in an environment that was welcoming and consistent, a big challenge he believed needed solving. After some major learning curves, he started to find his feet in the later parts of 2025, which led to winning Best of Zululand for "Best Coffee Shop", which played well into the goal of providing good coffee in the right environment.
The roastery consists of Latham as the only roaster and a team of great baristas who showcase the beans in the best way. Namely: Zinhle, Sphe, Mnqobi and Andile.
Their offering is limited to one blend as they worked hard to find the right "Daily Driver" for our shop, and their community sought something familiar and consistent, so they don't deviate too far from it. But they are hoping to expand their offering if and when the need arises to more unique lots and blends that will test their capabilities and expose their community to some more 'interesting' offerings.
Latham finds joy in different coffees for different applications, for example:
"I love an Ethopia for pour over without milk to enjoy the more Floral and fruity Characteristics, and love Colombia for more of the milky beverages, especially a cortado. Our roastery is in its infancy, but we seem to be serving our community well, and are so grateful for the support."
