We kicked off the year’s Creative Coffee Events presented by Yoco programme with Coffee Connect: Coffee Quiz&Music. It was an epic launch party at Bean There in Johannesburg on Sunday evening, which marked the start of an exciting series of events for 2026.
The idea was to have some fun and relax after a busy day at Hostex and we think the mission was successful! Great food, tasty beverages, coffee friends, loads of prizes to giveaway and the coolest DJ’s in the City of Gold (from the 031, of course)!
The evening kicked off with delicious snacks from KOS, a series of creative drinks by the mixologists from Da Vinci Gourmet and matcha creations including rosewater and elderflower from Red Espresso and Sanremo. Because... you can’t win a coffee quiz on an empty stomach!
Silly was the goal! So of course, head gear was necessary! We divided up the participants into 6 teams of 5, handed out the team ID’s and called for Team names.
First Place (we liked the positive thinking!)
The Pink Dolphins (best eyewear ever!)
Power Roasters (They were in it to win it from the start!)
Gaia - Goddess of the Earth (channelling their inner god/desses)
Thorn Amongst the Roses (Winston Thomas was the thorn apparently)
Slagatha Christie (Don’t even ask!)
And off we went! The music was pumping and the competition soon got intense as we burned through the first round of 20 questions. This was followed by a 15 point picture round, and then a taste test where teams had to “guess the origin” of two Bean There coffees (for a lot of points!) and finally, the killer Geography round to sort the robusta from the geisha.
In the end it came down to a tie for first place (but team First Place was not included hehe) - which meant a tie-breaker between the Power Roasters and Slagatha Christie! Each team had to find the country assigned to them on the blow up globe. Most accurate taking the win. Would you know where to draw Honduras and Papua New Guinea on a map? Neither did Slagatha Christie (Papua New Guinea), which meant the POWER ROASTERS took the win and the first place goodie bags!
With the Dj’s spinning classic vinyl, the drinks flowing and the celebrations that followed, no-one wanted to leave…but sadly, it was a Sunday night and only the first night of Hostex, so with many selfies, group hugs and high fives, we brought the first event of 2026 to a close, with new friendships made, new fun rivalries entrenched and most of all a sense that this year is going to be the best year ever!
