New Kid on the Block: Haisy Cafe, Hilton

Friday, 27 June, 2025

When the world is going a little crazy and things seem a little dark, one of the things that gives us hope is seeing new, comforting cafe spaces popping up around the country. Hilton has become quite a hub of coffee shops! Now, amongst their ranks is Haisy Café, a family-owned café supplying Hiltonians with delicious specialty coffee and already-famous breakfasts.

After only being open for a few months, Haisy has made their mark on the community with their high quality food and drinks, beautiful interior and the intentional design of their space. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, but professional and upmarket. It’s no question that this is down to the exceptional service you will experience from the baristas and waitrons.

We sat down with Jean Du Rand, part-owner and operator, to talk about the venture that he and his family have taken on. “We moved down from Johannesburg when my daughter was about to be born so that we could be around family for a while.”  The café is actually named after Jean and his partner Jade’s young daughter, Haisley. Jade’s father. Alan Burton, has been the driving force behind the cafe. “The opportunity popped up with Jade’s dad to open a little coffee shop, which after two weeks of being open we realised was going to be a bigger task than we expected. We were super busy and a bit overwhelmed.” Jean refers to the notorious Hilton mist as he recalls another inspiration for the name Haisy. “While we were developing the cafe and getting the shop ready, there were a lot of late nights and it was always ‘hazy’ when we drove out. We just thought it fitted perfectly with the location as well as our daughter’s name.”

He goes on to talk a little bit about their offering, “our food is kept simple and elegant, we use the healthiest possible option to make each dish eg: we only use olive oil to cook the food. Something a lot of people don’t know is we don’t charge for alternative milks eg:oat and almond. Just one of our ways to be “different”,  our prices are low and affordable and the quality doesn’t drop, each plate of food is checked before going to a client. But we are still focused on speed and precision.”

“We wanted to create something that is elegant and casual in the same breathe , whether you need a spot to do a zoom meeting or coming for a birthday celebration or anniversary, the way the café looks needs to service both.” The team are always looking for ways to improve their space and their offering, with extreme attention to detail.
