Honour Roll Inductees 2024

Monday, 9 December, 2024

This year on the celebration of our 50th Edition, we are beginning The Coffee Magazine Honour Roll .  This will be very personal, the humans who helped us to start and sustain a magazine about coffee culture on the Southern tip of Africa and these are largely the suppliers to the industry. In future years, we will open up this category to Nominations and grow the Honour Roll, but this is the very first year and we are deeply indebted to these amazing humans who have supported this platform from the beginning! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Alessandro Morrico - Morrico Specialist Coffee Supplies

Our very first advertiser to sign on to this crazy idea! And he hasn’t missed an issue!  Passionate, stubborn, frustrating, typically Italian - always late with artwork - we’ve shared some of the most memorable moments of this journey with him - always over food, always with a sense of humour. Ciao Alessandro!

Unfortunately Alessandro couldn't be with us, but we will cheers together over a meal soon!

George Karatzas - Equipment Cafe, Espresso Africa, Koldserve

Our Yesman! George has never said no to any request. He’s bargained us down to our “best price” every time and we expect nothing less. George and his team are at every event and are as much a part of our work as we are. We are so grateful to George for everything you put into the coffee industry. And special mention for wearing long pants to our event ;)

Neil Maree - Genio Roasters

Neil did not hesitate to step forward when we launched ASITD. In fact he agreed to a 5 year sponsorship in our first meeting when we pitched the idea to him, which was an adaption of a surfboard design competition called “A Stab in the Dark”  re-modelled to a coffee roasting competition. Neil was the person who challenged us to run it in the Middle East and was the push we needed to take this event International.

Carol Corlett - Zuka Green Coffee

Aunty Carol has opened her heart and her business to us since we launched ASITD. All 7 editions have been run out of her building. She is the Godmother of our Industry with a huge heart, a passion for people and a resilience that has seen her overcome many challenges. She is tough! Her black belt is testament to that, but it is her passion for people that sets her apart. We love you Aunty Carol.

David Donde - Truth Coffee

Writer, speaker, serial entrepreneur and disrupter, David has written for us and advised us, admonished us and praised us and he always tells his truth. Even if it's not always agreed with! He pushed us to think bigger to go International and to believe in our products, because they are world class. We finally believe that it’s the Truth.

Mon & Pete Ethelston - Red Espresso

This dynamic duo founded Red Espresso in 2005. They have been loyal advertisers and supported our events, but more than that  - as a family business, they have given us personal guidance, business advice and have been so incredibly encouraging, giving us affirmation even we’ve doubted ourselves. And for that we are eternally grateful.

Werner Kannemeyer – Electrical Industries

Werner loves an event and he has never hesitated to put his support behind our crazy ideas. From the movie screenings of Coffee Man at the Labia Theatre over 10 years ago, to numerous Creative Coffee Weeks and the huge support he put behind Coffee Magazine Awards today – his word is his bond and he is one of those supporters in this industry that you know will always have your back. And he likes to have a meeting over a beer in a dodgy bar, a man after our own hearts.

These 8 people are the first inductees of the Honour Roll and we celebrate them and thank them. Coffee Magazine would not be where we are today if it weren’t for your unwavering support.
