DGC Club Coffee Review: Wiara Coffee

Friday, 25 April, 2025

Hailing from the Durbanville area in the Western cape is Wiara Coffee. Their Roaster's Choice is the coffee featured in this edition's Discover Great Coffee Club box - and it's a ripper!  Wiara Coffee change the Roaster's Choice on a monthly basis and this month is a single origin from Democratic Republic of Congo. The DRC bean is roasted with a medium to dark profile. The flavour notes associated with this bean are darker berries and milk chocolate.  The dry fragrance while grinding this was insane - spicy and chocolately and had me salivating.

I thought, since it's a cool day here I'd go for the trusty and comforting Italian method of the Moka Pot and brew it in a style that is honest to this kind of profile.  As you can see from the images, the roast is nice an even and the toasty frangrace is present while grinding and especially while brewing. It's a chilly day here at the Coffee Mag HQ - pouring with rain and gloomy - so this (and a healthy slice of Mel's banana bread ) was the perfect comfort on a day like today!

I actually had two goes at this - the first one was a little under extracted (my fault - so I tightened the grinder and made the grind a bit more fine) and the second attempt was spot on! Full Bodied, bold mouthfeel with flavours of dark fruits and cacao nibs and a long finish. It took me right back to Italy!

I love a touch of warm milk and this really sweetened the cup profile and gave a delicious, hot and comforting coffee which reminded me of warm coco pops milk which i loved as a child. The slice of banana bread didn't hurt either!

A medium to medium/dark,  well developed roast profile.  Just like the itlian style!

A perfect method for this coffee is the moka pot.

Espresso signore?  The perfect way to enjoy this coffee.
