Shewaan Khan, one of the owners of Yellow Jacket Coffee Roasters, is hungry for knowledge and through his quest to learn, we have had the privilege to get to know him a bit at our events And so we were very excited to finally have the opportunity to visit the cafe and roastery in the Southern suburbs of Cape Town.
Tucked along a sweet street in Kenilworth, the quirky zen of Ikigai beckons. Zen because the vibe is mellow and calm and quirky because there are manga figurines adorning the coffee equipment and there are bright pops of colour to energise your senses.
Walking in you'll immediately see the custom yellow Genio Roaster proudly on display. And on this particular occasion, Shewaan was firing her up.
We were treated to a lovely Colombian geisha pour over in beautiful blue glasses and sublime eats from the kitchen. All the sauces and bread and tacos are made in house and each bite was a delight! (The mint pesto on the sandwich plate was particularly memorable and complimentary of the pulled lamb!)
Wonderful to see the familiar face of Ndumiso Qolintaba (a veteran of Quaffee and Origin) who is loving the opportunity to work in all parts of the coffee business, nit just behind the bar.
Then we got to witness something really great. A three times a week tradition apparently, the whole team, coffee and kitchen plus whoever else would like to join (in this case Iain!) gather for a cup tasting competition to train their palates. So fun! Shewaan is a newly qualified Q-grader, so it's an excellent way to keep his skills sharp and for the entire team to practice their skills. Chef Dane won on this day! Commitment to excellence, we love it!
