Can you share your journey to becoming the South African barista champion? What inspired you to pursue this path?
Coffee and hospitality wasn’t really a career I planned. What started as a holiday job while studying quickly turned into a passion and something I wanted to pursue. I remember the first time I saw a YouTube video of a barista competition and I was instantly intrigued. I wanted to compete to challenge myself and to meet others in the industry. I never thought I’d be in this position so soon and in my first year of competition. Having the full support of my friends and family is what inspired me to pursue this career and journey.
If you could create a coffee drink inspired by a South African dessert or dish, what would it be?
Something that resembles a peppermint crisp tart. So simple yet a great classic.
How did you prepare for competitions, Any specific routines/unconventional strategies or practices that helped you prepare?
I’d like to say I have a secret or something very specific but I don’t think I do. I just remember writing my set as many times as possible, wherever I could find space. While constantly repeating it to myself and anyone who would listen. The environment and the people around me is definitely what helped me excel.
What’s your go-to music playlist when brewing or enjoying coffee?
Fred Again is the first that comes to mind. While not particularly the most relaxing music to brew coffee to, it was the music that calmed me while also hyping me up the night before Nationals Finals.
Can you share a memorable moment or story from your experience in the Barista competition?
Winning Nationals with most of the Father Coffee team there was definitely special. It takes the help of so many to compete so sharing that moment with friends who played a pivotal role definitely meant a lot.
Do you have any innovative coffee-related projects or ideas you plan to pursue post-competition that you can share ?
I wouldn’t say innovative, but mostly just helping others with competition while constantly improving and working on myself. I’m far from an expert or a good coach but just sharing my experiences and journey with others is important to me.
Who is your barista hero or role model, and why do you look up to them?
It has to be Winston Thomas. I remember when I met him for the first time and it felt like I was meeting a celebrity or professional athlete. It’s felt the same every time since. I look up to him for the passion that he shares with the Specialty Coffee Industry in South Africa and his achievements.
Luke is also invested in expanding his own skills, recently joining the April Brewers Cup judging panel to learn more about this format and flavour in general!
