Cafe of the Week: The Lucky Bread

Tuesday, 21 January, 2014
Now if you have known me for more than five minutes, you will know that I detest shopping centres. They make me feel claustrophobic and my pale skin hates the fluorescent lighting and my patience can't deal with queues and the people in those queues.

The Lucky Bread Company then, started off on the back foot for me as it is slap bang in the centre of a Brooklyn Mall aisle.

We came up the escalator and there it was. A pourover stand and wood panelling and the smell of fresh bread and an elegant logo and bulbs of warm light.

Gorgeous design work.

So much bread!!! Paulie Coetsee is the genius behind kneading that dough!

Try a single origin coffee, sourced by TriBeCa Coffee.

So my fears about entering Mordor were put to rest and we took our very trendy seats to peruse the menu. Matt Carter first recommended this spot to us quite some time back so expectations were high.

We weren't disappointed. The espresso, using the 'Lucky 6' blend, was smooth and well rounded and especially delicious when cut with a little warm milk.

The bread is freshly baked every morning and simply divine, so we had to try some sarmies!

Beautifully presented food with little touches like fresh grown greens that make the meal special.

They recently celebrated their first birthday! Congratulations

We featured them in our best cafe bakery feature in Issue 6 of TheCoffeeMag.

"This collaborative affair between The Bread Gypsy and TriBeCa Coffee has spawned a legendary lovechild. This beautifully shopfitted space in the middle of a mall makes you forget where you are as you become transfixed by the stunning Kees van der Westen Mirage espresso machine, the shelves of stoneground loaves and the bins of single origin coffees on offer. With delights like apple and almond croissants on offer, the team has made sure that every detail is looked after right down to the bread boards the food is served on. They have developed a house blend called the “Lucky 6”. It consists of 6 of the best coffees available at the time and it tastes superb."

Highly recommended.
