6 teams of Baristas went up against each other in the inaugural Johannesburg edition of Tamp That! The Barista Gameshow run by Coffee Magazine and hosted by Jonsson Workwear.
In the end it, was the team in Orange “Grumpy’s Cafe” that took the honours and the R6000 first prize, followed closely by Team Seattle in their traditional blue taking home R4000 and rounding up the podium positions was the Independents Team “Baristas of Note” taking home R1500.
While the DJ pumped out the beats and got the vibe going in the beautifully curated Jonsson Workwear store in Edenvale, The teams, made up of 4 baristas each, had 5 special cafe-related tasks to get through, earning points in each round.
Tasks included the "Pressure Test" - dialling in a grinder and pulling a perfect espresso, The "Magic Wand" latte art pour off, Caffeine-Buzz - the barista quiz, The famous “Order-Up customer service challenge and Barista Pictionary!

While the barista got to work, the Saturday shoppers enjoyed the vibe in the store and learned a lot about coffee culture from our contestants - and everyone enjoyed cool drinks and boerie rolls provided by Jonsson, through the competition. Two spectators even went home with R1000 each in Jonsson vouchers after finding the Coffee Magazines hidden around the store.
“Everyone enjoyed the outing and we’re all buzzing!” said Dylan Kirton, team captain of the winning team, Grumpy’s Cafe. “We’re ready for the Regional Barista competitions now!”
