As a self-confessed 'everything is 20 minutes away' in Durban devotee, one of the things I cherish most about calling this chilled coastal city home is that most of my favourite places and people fall within the 20 minute radius. I will admit that this does make me a bit reluctant to travel further and I need real plans for 'treks' that take me beyond this.
Well, I am so pleased I did on this occasion, after chatting to Luca and Jody Barausse and being berated for not making an effort to get up the hill. We arrived just as The Harvest was opening its doors on a drizzly Friday morning to be Christian's first customers. This wonderfully warm barista set about dialling in his grinder and serving us some lovely coffees. They are trialling a new coffee from Crane Flower Roastery, The African Blend and the beautiful pottery mugs were so cosy for the chilly morning. The coffee had malt chocolate notes and was so comforting. Lovely to see local businesses supporting each other.
Christian was an excellent ambassador for the space, telling us about all the activities available at Camp Orchards and how the process for ordering worked. You pay for your coffee at his station and then can trundle over to the deli to purchase your eats. I indulged in a pasteis de nata and a mini pig in a blanket (so cute!).
I sat very happily on the deck taking in the quiet and the lowing cows. Felt like I was in a different world, what a treat.
They also offer picnic baskets for their sprawling lawns (picnic blanket rental included!) and have some walking trails on site. They offer live music some Saturdays too. It must be extremely festive on blue sky days full of humans, but I thoroughly enjoyed the calm of the early morning.
I also left with some organic veggies that are grown on the farm. I mean, so wholesome. A wonderful experience all round.
