Our dear friend, Lem Butler, has turned his attention from championships and business to championing a worthy cause with the Grounds for Health organisation.
The organisation focuses on providing screening and vaccinations to both catch and prevent cervical cancer in coffee growing regions. We were shocked to learn the statistics and just how preventable this form of cancer is. Amazing how advocacy programs like Lem through Grounds for Health can inform and educate. You can make a difference to women in Ethiopia who have very limited access to cancer screening and treatment facilities. Important work.
"We are currently the only NGO in Ethiopia providing free cancer screening and treatment for women who work in coffee. Women make up 70-80% of the coffee labor force and for a place I have admired for their incredible coffee it hit home thinking about it. I have always been impressed with the work of Grounds For Health and when I was asked to join the board 3 years ago I didn’t hesitate," Lem explained to us.
"We walk 10 kilometers not for the distance, but for the women who’ve walked much farther — carrying harvests, carrying families, carrying diagnoses in silence. Every step is a reminder that coffee is human, and humanity deserves care."
