The Airport Run: Some tips for SA Airports and Airplanes

***Disclaimer***This is not an exhaustive list, we haven't been everywhere, or tried coffee on all the airlines, but this is what we've experienced in the recent past.

Travelling for work is a stressful and usually involves

We were inspired to write this because Bootlegger recently kicked off their partnership with FlySafair and it got us to thinking...

We're pretty spoilt on our low cost airline options, vida e caffe have been working  with Lift Airline for 5 years now, ever since they began, always offering a solid black coffee option and even alternative milk.

Bootlegger offers a few options for FlySafair customers, I have only tried the Cappuccino option which is a sachet and is sweetened, which is understandable! I will probably opt for the black coffee (listed as Colombia FD Blend Americano, perhaps also a sachet?) next time as I generally don't take sugar, but I was interested in what the cappuccino would be on board.

The coffee chain game in South Africa is on turbo at the moment, with all the big guys pushing each other to keep innovating and keep their brand at the top of your mind. It's a pretty exciting time and it only means better coffee across the board.

So your Domestic Departures options:

KIng Shaka International Departures is a Wimpy or Fego affair, but as this is my hometown, I definitely plan enough time to bring coffee with me. There's a W Cafe downstairs, which is your best bet by quite a long way. But you have to remember to get it before you go through the security gates!

If you're through security at OR Tambo Domestic Departures, you've got a few solid options. The vida e caffe kiosk brings their signature vibey baristas and 9 out of 10 times a reliable cup. But after a disappointing one a couple weeks ago, we were inspired to branch out - to the place right next door called Grabb. It's usually not as busy as its more recognisable neighbour, and worth a try. A beautiful Victoria Arduino machine and Nuova Simonelli grinder setup inspire confidence and the staff are very friendly, efficient and will help you choose a bite to eat quickly too, before you catch your flight .

Cape Town International has a very popular Mugg&Bean through the security gates with really excellent service and well made coffee.

If you're at smaller Lanseria Airport, we normally end up Kauai who have put a lot of work into their coffee game. The Wiesenhof has a cool view of the runway. And old faithful vida e is also on hand. Note: These are all before you go through security.

I will be honest with you, if I travel any time past 12pm and have had my daily coffee quota, I normally opt for a Wimpy cheeseburger and a strawberry milkshake. My little guilty pleasure and a reminder of family road trips when I was a child (their coffee has improved in leaps and bounds since back in the day too!). And it's a South African institution, so I feel every tourist should try it at least once.
