Over 125 coffee industry professionals enjoyed stunning views of Table Mountain from the Rooftop on Bree while attending the first ever version of CCW in the Mother City! The views were spectacular, the presentations inspiring and the coffee…well there was so much incredible coffee on offer!
The second event in a three part series, called “The Bigger Picture” (see the front cover of Coffee Magazine issue #52) is themed on a jigsaw puzzle with three key pieces of the coffee value chain - Farmer/producer (Durban event), Roasting (Cape Town) and finally, Cafe and Coffee Hospitality (Johannesburg in December)
The majority of the talks focused on Roasting Coffee, and all of the supporting business around making a successful coffee roastery - from sourcing green coffee, to Roasting techniques and marketing, packaging and branding of coffee for Roasteries and the education around coffee qualifications. There was a large focus on blending, and a blending challenge for the guests to experience. There was sample roasting and there was batch roasting - all on the rooftop! We were even privileged enough to learn from leading wine-maker Trizanne Barnard and the parallels between wine and coffee.
This event was supported by the best brands in the coffee Industry, and all the Sponsors had fun activations, product samples and games for the participants to interact with, and to learn something new - The CCW Bingo was a big hit!
We then moved venues for day two to the African School of Coffee, where we cupped some incredible coffees, including, SA grown Coffees, the best of Scandinavia and three surprise Panama’s from a mystery guest appearance! We enjoyed the first ever Cupping Relay (so much fun …we’re thinking of making it an annual national event!) and then we rounded off the day with the SA Aeropress Championships!
